Recent discussion off the board has led me to need to mention a few important points, so I've started this topic as a general brainstorming area for this purpose. Comment on the points below as much as humanly possible.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) KEEPING THE ROCK WORLD UPDATED
Yolanda suggested a thread on NNP, which would be purely for announcements of gigs, club nights, etc. I have had some thoughts on this. The first thing mentioned was that the thread would fill up with meaningless spaff and/or mudslinging.
e.g.:
post 1: "Next week at the Old Angel, Michael Ackerfeldt of Opeth is will be revealing his new band, (insert pretentious name here). Support will be from Evanesce."
post 2: "ooooh ooooh Opeth! yay"
post 3: "opeth r krap u fukin morron"
post 4: "Shut up, Spike."
post 5: "linken park r kool"
post 6: "Fuck off, you twat. Linkin Park should have their lungs cut out with chainsaws until they bleed to death."
post 7: "I like evanescence"
post 8: "It's EVANESCE you blind cunt"
(etc etc etc etc etc etc)
This ruins the whole idea of the thread. However, I think it could work. I see it happening several ways:
(a) The thread is posted here.
Pros: No twats such as Jaws or Nasty Nick. It's open to anyone, even though the membership is mainly Nottingham and Leicester. Yours truly and Stan can keep the thread free of spaff.
Cons: There's nowhere near enough people on here, and I want the thread to be as informative about gigs and clubs to as many people as possible.
(b) The thread is posted on NNP.
Pros: More people see it, and more people means access to more information, including events that only two people would have heard about otherwise.
Cons: Twats, obviously. Leicester people don't look at NNP much, and maybe there are some trenters that don't, as well. Also, if I was to launch the thread myself, I'd need to recruit one of the moderators to sort out the spaff without deleting valuable information, rather than being able to do it myself.
Less valid options:
(c) Post the thread on Sell-out.
Pros: Highest circulation of any Nottingham board.
Cons: A very high degree of proven twattery. All the cons from the NNP idea - with extra difficulty. I don't read Sell-out at all.
(d) Post the thread on the "East Midlands" Rocksoc.com forum.
Pros: Available to Nottingham, Leicester, Derby, and... is there anywhere I've forgotten?
Cons: Nobody *ever* looks at this bit, they go straight to the "local" forum.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
(2) THE "ALTERNATIVE" ROCKSOC / VOMITORIUM EXPANSION
This is another of Yolanda's suggestions.
The idea is, those of us who are disillusioned with the way Nottingham and/or Trent Rocksocs are being run, can quite easily organise things ourselves if there's enough of us willing to chip in. From what I hear, the main idea is to organise trips to clubs and/or gigs that interest us, without having to make it an "official" Rocksoc trip. This avoids problems such as:
- Dan and/or Spike won't organise the trip because it's not all things to all people.
- Twats throwing in unhelpful comments.
- The Nottingham/Trent war which really shouldn't exist *at all*, but there are still some arseholes willing to keep it up.
There was a suggestion of an (unofficial) weekly meeting for this purpose - at Spiders on a Friday night. This way, we get to go out, hear metal, drink beer and give out favourite club some much-needed income - and on top of that, get anything sorted that we want to sort, so we actually end up doing something interesting rather than sitting around moaning about how there's not enough rock in the area.
We'd then need some kind of forum for brainstorming the ideas away from Spiders and getting them organised into some kind of plan - and what better place to do that than this board right here!
If the Friday council of war goes ahead, then I will turn this board into the central forum for it, so we can keep a record of what we're doing, when and where - so nobody is ever left out. This will also bring new members to the board. An upshot of this is that this board *will* have the gigs list mentioned in section 1.
If there's enough interest in starting up the council of war, then I will personally start it in April.
The only remaining matter would be what to call ourselves - and, given the general disillusionment with Rocksoc and the fact that we're in Nottingham *and* in the company of one M. Walkyier, I suggest:
"The Disenchanted Forest"
(it's a Skyclad track from "Folkemon", for those of you who didn't know.)
If I think of anything else to discuss... I'll post it here.
